Directors Statement
"Nocturne was an ambitious first film to direct as it required the creation of a bygone era of Edwardian England. We shot on location in Leicester, making use of its historic stone cobbled streets for the external scenes and using an Edwardian terrace house to shoot the interior scenes. Props were key to add a sense of historic realism, in particular the use of clocks and pocket watches, which were integral to the storyline.

The professionalism of the cast helped bring to life the challenges of the script, such as the Edwardian dialogue and a pivotal scene which was acted entirely in mime. Philip Hughes as the watchsmith created a performance both quirky and edgy, and Lexy Howe delivered a subtle performance that embodied the  character of an Edwardian seamstress.

Filmed in high definition, Trevor Hughes and Claire Barker created a look and feel to Nocturne that is both historical and surreal. The dream-scene in particular required very precise lighting setups, and the Frame on Frame team met these challenges with skill. Arun Rama Varma brought his experience from Bollywood films to record the sound on Nocturne, capturing both the location sound and dubbing in post production.

The final piece to the puzzle was provided by Frame on Frame in post production. Trevor Hughes worked tirelessly in the editing suite to condense the hours of raw footage into the 12 minutes of Nocturne. The overall result is a film which aims to capture the imagination of the viewer and invite them into the world of the watchsmith."

Post-production: Nocturne was edited on Final Cut Pro, which allowed the addition of special effects (such as the bottle materialising as if by magic on the dinner table during the dream scene). Using Final Cut Pro also meant that the 'Colour' program could be used to grade the film, which created a more balanced look to the film rather than high white / black contrast that initially showed up on the raw footage.

Now complete, Nocturne is being launched onto the festival circuit - starting out it Hollyshort Los Angeles

The production of Nocturne went smoothly  and on budget. In total the production cost was approximately £1000. Nocturne was shot over three days with approximately 3 months of preplanning. The success of completing Nocturne on time and on budget comes down to the professionalism of the team and their dedication to film and artistic presentation.
