Frame On Frame have developed a one day intensive practical workshop for actors looking in depth at screen performance. It aims to demythologize screen performance, providing actors with confidence and trust in the camera.

This workshop is not just about actors hitting their marks, by placing the emphasis on the technical aspect of screen performance, actors are able to be more relaxed and creative. We believe with this foundation and understanding of how film is a pieced together an actor is freed up to do what they do best.

We will be covering:

Blocking for screen

Framing, film grammar, depth of field

Tailoring performance for shot size

Continuity

Eye line

How screen and theatre performance differs

Maintaining focus and on set practice

We will be working with a group of approximately six actors.

By keeping the group very small we can guarantee that actors will get the most out of this opportunity. The first half of the workshop will involve breaking down scenes from various films in terms of blocking and framing, looking at shot sizes and performance etc.

In the second half of the class, each actor will play out a scripted scene that will be filmed with very specific blocking and framing using a variety of shots. Other actors are encouraged to look at the monitor to understand how specific blocking effects what we see and experience on screen. The day will be an intensive, fun rewarding learning environment with a good balance of practical work, observation and discussion.

We will be shooting in high definition and working with track and jib to highlight the difference between moving and static camera. We will also work with lens adapters to give an idea of depth of field and shot size and how this effects performance. There is also the opportunity for actors to purchase an edited version of the scene on dvd.

The workshop is a great environment to try things out, share experience and pass on advice. It is ideally suited to actors who are looking for more screen experience and a greater understanding of screen acting practice and technique. By focusing on blocking and framing for camera and shooting for the edit we aim to equip actors with the professional know-how that may otherwise take years to pick up.

The workshop is run by Claire Barker (director) and Trevor Hughes (dop).

Claire and Trevor have worked extensively together on several film projects as Director and Director of Photography. By having both a director and DOP present we are able to look deeper at how the choices they make relate to performance and also create a more authentic filming environment.
