Swim Fat Boy Swim
An ice water odyssey
Nigel Reid is an average, somewhat overweight and out of shape, middle aged man who just happens to enjoy the occasional cold water swim at the Tooting Bec Lido.
Demotivated and depressed by his increasing girth, he decides that something needs to be done and embarks on a strict four week training schedule in readiness for the National Cold Water Swimming Championships of Finland, the home of winter swimming.
Swim Fat Boy Swim traces Nigel's journey from casual swimmer in South London to serious competitor in the Finnish National Championships. He meets an array of interesting characters, from the once weekly dippers at the Tooting Bec Lido to world champions in the sport, and in doing so attempts to discover what on earth could motivate anyone to hurl themselves into ice cold water in the middle of winter.
However, ultimately this is one man's personal challenge to get in shape and confront the ravages of time, fried breakfasts and beer. Share his ups and downs as he readies himself to meet his own peculiar sporting destiny. Can he succeed and achieve glory in Finland or does this turn out to be a case of one fried breakfast too many?
